Laurel Hill State Park
Laurel Hill State Park comprises 4,062 acres of mountainous terrain in Somerset County. The 63-acre Laurel Hill Lake is a focal point of the park. A trail system invites visitors to explore the park and observe the diversity of plants and wildlife. The Jones Mill Run Dam and the Hemlock Trail Natural Area are two must-see destinations on your visit.
Classic Covered Bridges
Somerset County has ten historic covered bridges; two are close to Rockwood. Barronvale Covered Bridge is the furthest upstream of covered bridges across Laurel Hill Creek. At 162 feet, it is the longest of the ten covered bridges in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. King’s Covered Bridge is just a few minutes from Barronvale Bridge. It was likely built in 1906 and is 127 feet long.
Mount Davis
This is the highest point in Pennsylvania – 3,213 ft. It is located in Forbes State Forest on a gentle crest of a 30-mile ridge extending from just northeast of Rockwood southward into Garrett County, Maryland. The summit of Mt. Davis can be reached by car or hiking trails. A metal observation tower stands near the actual high point.
Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail
Spanning over 70 miles, the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail is a path of discovery through rolling hills and verdant forests. It’s a perfect blend of challenge and tranquility, suitable for casual day hikes and ambitious backpacking adventures.
